WSOB Rules

For the most part the World Series of Blackjack uses standard Blackjack rules to conduct play such as the dealer hitting 16 and standing of Soft-Seventeen or higher. There are a few differences from standard Blackjack that sets the WSOB apart.

Generally in most Blackjack games the dealer will deal out all cards before the players begin playing thier hands. However in the WSOB it seems that the dealer is dealt their two cards then the first player is dealt their two cards, they then play their hand and when finished the dealer moves to the next player and the process continues. After all players have played their hand the dealer then plays their hand. This is a unique way of playing Blackjack and it seems to add some excitement to the round as the play is totally focused on the player of the moment. It also gives each player the same advantage as the player in the 3rd base position will get the same amount of time to think about the hand as the player in the first position.

Along with the slight change in dealing the WSOB employes some truely unique rules that are used to enhance the excitement of the game. These enhancements were added in the 3rd season.

Knockout Card:

There are two knockout cards suffed into the deck just before it is placed in the shoe. When a knockout card appears the player with the lowest chip total is eliminated from the tournament. If a player is eliminated prior to the knockout card appearing then the knockout card is ignored. Personaly I think the knockout card is a bad idea as it eliminates to possibility of a great comeback which every one loves to see happen.

Power Chip:

This is a special chip that is given to each player at the start of a round. This chip (which is sponsored by Burger King) gives the player the ability to exchange one of their cards for the next card in the shoe. If the player decides to use to Power chip when they are doubling down they get to pre-view the card being dealt to them and decide if they want it or the next card in the shoe.

Second Chance:

The second chance draw gives 2 players that finished 3rd, 4th, or 5th a chance at participating in one of the 2 Wildcard games. Each wild card game has 4 2nd place finishers and one spot reserved for a second chance draw winner. A player that finishes 3rd will receive 3 tickets for the draw, 4th place finishers will get 2 tickets and 5th place finishers will get 1 ticket each for the second chance draw.

The final table has a Second Chance seat reserved again for 3rd, 4th and 5th place finishers from the semi-final tables. Again each player that finished in 3rd, 4th or 5th place will receive tickets to the Second Chance draw and if their name is drawn they get to sit at the final table as the 5th player.

As you can see the enhanced rules are there to make the game more exciting for the TV audience. Whether you think the enhancements makes the game more exciting or not is up to you but we have to remember that the WSOB is trying to make Blackjack exciting for a TV audience.
