Blackjack Odds

As long as there has been casinos there has been Blackjack and as long as there is Blackjack there will be casinos. This may sound odd but Blackjack is probably the most popular game in the casino. Like all casino games, Blackjack has been designed to give the casino an advantage over the players. What most people do not realize is that picking the right game and using the proper strategy the advantage the casino has can be drastically lowered in the players favour.

The first thing to understanding the Blackjack Odds is to understand what concepts make up these odds.

The first of these is the house edge. The house edge is how much money the casino expects to win of each wager placed. With a 5% house edge the casino expects to win $5 for every $100 wagered. It is important to remember that this is over the long run and at any given time the casino may be losing money or winning more than 5% on each wager.

The next item is the Pay Out Percentage. The Pay Out Perentage is how much money is expected to be returned to the player. So using our example from above the casino expects to keep 5% and they expect to return 95% so this would be a Pay Out Percentage of 95%.

Along with the House Edge some casino games have a Vig or Vigorish. A Vig is charged on a win and must always be considered when calculating casino odds.

The last item we need to understand the the House Hold. The House Hold is the same as the house edge, it is how much money the can expect to keep. While House Edge is a theoretical number the House Hold is a real number.

Unlike Slots, Roulette, Baccarat or any other casino game the Blackjack player can affect these factors to their advantage by making the correct decision when it comes to playing. When playing Blackjack without using basic Strategy you are working with a House Edge that ranges from around 2% to around 5%.

As you can see below selecting the right Blackjack Game can affect what your starting House Edge is:
