How to Play Blackjack

Now that you have a good understanding of the basic rules of Blackjack we'll cover how best to play this woderfully fun game.

The first step is choosing the right table. When you walk upto a Blackjack table you will see emblazened on the table felt 'Blackjack Pays 3 to 2'. This is clear message that the table you are looking at will pay you 3 to 2 odds if you are dealt a Blackjack. There have been reports of other odds being payed out like 6 to 5 but I strongly recommend you stick to a table with 3 to 2 odds.
The felt will also tell you another important detail about the table. 'Dealer stands on all Soft 17s' or 'Dealer hits on all Soft 17s'. A table which has the dealer standing on soft 17 offers the best odds it is still ok to play a table with the dealer hitting a soft 17, it is just very important to know this so you can select the proper strategy to use when you are playing.
Each and every table in the casino will have a minimum and a maximum bet limit that players must follow. This information will be posted on a sign sitting on the table. Depending on the day and time of day these values will change so it is important to watch as the $1 minimum table you played at yesterday might be a $5 minimum table today.

Once you have selected a table you will need casino chips to play. If you have casino chips already, perfect there is nothing more to do than sit down and place your first wager. If you don't have casino chips don't worry the dealer can sell you some. Simply place the amount of money you wish to exchange for casino chips on the table and ask the dealer for '$100 in chips please.' The dealer will take your money and return the value in casino chips. Some important points, only ask the dealer for chips when there is a pause in the action and don't try to hand money directly to the dealer. The dealer is going to help you when they are in the middle of a game and they are not allowed to take money directly from a player.

The chips are colour coded and have their value printed on their face. The colour coding is generally standardized at all casinos and are usually broken down like this:

Chip Value Chip Color
$1 White
$2.50 Pink
$5 Red
$25 Green
$100 Black
$500 Purple

Once you have your casino chips it is time to place your first wager. Simply place the amount of chips you wish to wager into the reserved spot on the table in front of you for your wager. This spot will be either a circle or a square and will be clearly marked. Place the chips with a larger value on the bottom and stanck the chips neatly. An important note is that once the dealer starts dealing the cards you cannot touch your stack of chips. When the hand is finished the dealer will either remove your stack of chips, place an second stack of equal value beside the first stack or leave the stack where it is and do nothing depending on whether you lose, win or tie.

After all the players at the table have finished placing thier wagers the dealer will begin dealing the cards to the players starting with the player on the dealers immediate left. One card to each player will be dealt face up to each player moving from left to right around the table finishing with their card. This card is dealt face down and is called the hole card. After the dealers card is dealt they will return to the player on their left and begin dealing the second card to each player again face up moving from left to right ending with their second card which is dealt face up this time.

With all the cards dealt the dealer will return their attention again to the player on their left to begin the round of play. As each player finishes playing their hand bu standing or busting the dealer will move to the next player, again making their way from lef tto right around the table. When the last player at the table has finished playing their hand the dealer will play their hand using the table rules.

The dealer does not get to make any decisions as to how they would play the hand. If you had a 15 you may decide to hit or you may decide to stand, the dealer doesn't have this choice. Dealer rules have the dealer always hitting on hand that are less than 17 and standing on hands that are greater than 17. When the dealers hand is 17 there are special rules that come into effect depending on the table you are playing at. Do you remember the 'Dealer Stands/Hits on Soft 17' message that is written on the table's felt? This rule is what the dealer will use when their hand is a 17. If the dealer's hand is 17 and it is considered a soft 17, which means it contains an Ace the dealer will either hit or stand depending on the table's rule. If the hand does not contain an Ace it is considered a Hard 17 and the dealer will not hit even if the table says 'Dealer hits on Soft 17'.

That is the basics on how to play blackjack. It really is a fun and easy game to play. Without going any further at this point you would be simply guessing as to what your next decision should be. I strongly recommend that you read up and learn Basic Strategy It will make your Blackjack experience much more enjoyable.
